The 5 musicians of the Gnaoua music group Maallam Chrif Kadiri will immerse you in the world of Gnawamusic, one of the main traditional Moroccan music. The Gnawa form a popular religious brotherhood, whose practices are the legacy of animist cults of Sub-Saharan slaves settled in Morocco. Gnawa musicians are present on festive (weddings in particular) and ritual (trances of possession by supernatural beings)occasions; they sing, dance and accompany themselves on various instruments, including the guembri,a three-string lute, Krakeb, the famous metal castanets, and tbel drums, not forgetting their sparkling costumes decorated with shells! Gnawa music has a very marked sacred and spiritual dimension, which gives it a very codified character, with a precise succession of songs and dance.
Let’s not forget that Essaouira hosts every year in June a festival of international renown: The Gnawa World Music Festival.

They perform on Sundays and Mondays in the first part of the evening between 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
